Steve Neale
Steve Neale declares that 'genres are instances of repetition and difference'. He adds that 'difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre': mere repetition would not attract an audience. Texts often exhibit the conventions of more than one genre in order to differentiate and attract audiences. How have we supported Steve Neale's theory in our film trailer? Our film conforms to many of the thriller genre conventions, for example fast paced transitions to create a panicked atmosphere, non-diegetic dark, sinister and tension building music is used. However, there are differences within our film that subvert genre conventions, for example our trailer begins in an urban location of a housing estate, which subverts conventions of thriller films being set in isolated locations. This is intended in order to intrigue audiences into watching our film as it is a different beginning to most thriller film trailers. |
