Tessa Perkins says that stereotypes are used in the media in order for audiences to recognise and identify characters quicker. She says the media is often too short for audiences to be introduced to a character ind Beth, and so it relies on pre-based assumptions of characters, for audiences to understand characters, which is achieved through conforming to stereotypes that audiences are already familiar with.

Our character conform to their traditional gender stereotypes, for example the protagonist is shown as the princess, a vulnerable and weak female who requires saving from a strong male hero - her boyfriend. This therefore conforms to both male and female gender stereotypes, and supports Tessa's theory of the media using typical stereotypes.
